In the title track from the band’s definitive studio album, everything about it is badass: that first booming, ominous power-chord, the heavy vibe throughout, the police siren wailing amid the spiraling tension, and, of course, the most famous tautology in rock’n’roll: “Tonight there’s gonna be a jailbreak/Somewhere in the town.” And it remains a deathless classic: the intro, from Eric Bell, still magical. But in 1973, Whiskey In The Jar was a huge hit, their first.

Not so on that album’s explosive title track, with White and Scott Gorham trading stinging lead breaks, and Lynott spinning dark tales full of Eastern mystique.įamously, Lynott didn’t fancy it as a single, this rock version of a traditional Irish folk ballad. The received wisdom is that Lizzy lost some of their edge when the laidback Snowy White replaced the fiery Gary Moore for 1980’s Chinatown. Lizzy liked to play hard, but on this song they played it cool, and with such a lightness of touch – from the finger-clicking intro to a smooth sax solo from Supertramp’s John Helliwell. The hit single from Bad Reputation is all about the groove laid down in Lynott’s slippery bass lick. It was creepy how Lynott hissed: “Don’t unzip your zipper… cos you know I’m Jack The Ripper.” The song’s dark power made it the guiltiest of pleasures.ĭancing In The Moonlight (It’s Caught Me In Its Spotlight)

Lizzy’s most controversial song was a Top 10 hit in 1980, when the Yorkshire Ripper still had Britain in a grip of fear. The back cover of this album also has some pictures which chronicles the Thin Lizzy line ups from the trio which included Eric Bell (and drummer Brian Downey) in 1970, to the famous Robertson/Gorham dual guitar attack in the mid seventies, the transient Midge Ure phase after Moore decided to quit abruptly in 1979, Snowy White hasty inclusion during the early eighties until John Sykes and Darren Wharton along with Lynott, Gorham and Downey that were part of the Thin Lizzy that called it a day in 1983.” The Best Of Phil Lynott And Thin Lizzy has 15 tracks & you can trust that the usual suspects are all here as per usual which include Lizzy first hit single “”Whiskey In The Jar””, “”The Boys Are Back In Town””, Don’t Believe A Word”” and “”Sarah”” but it was nice to include “”Parisienne Walkways”” (featuring Gary Moore) and the Thunder And Lightning track “”Cold Sweat”” one of Thin Lizzy most powerhouse tunes as they closed their career with a bang.

To be fair to Tel Star, the tiny record label who licensed these tracks, they were prepared to go that bit further and do a television campaign to promote this album which came a year after Phil Lynott, Thin Lizzy enigmatic front man, passing. Besides the songwriting credits, the only information provided regarding the often over-looked Thin Lizzy, is a chronological chart which illustrates the Lizzy lineups from 1972 through 1983.
